Art History and Theory

Where the practice and theory of art meet through creative research

We conduct original research unique to an art university, linking artistic practice to theory and artwork to art history. We create an environment that supports creative research linked to the actual artwork, respecting the individual and educating a select few in both the theory and history of art.
The art history and theory major is designed to turn out sophisticated experts with a profound understanding of the arts through hands-on experiences, ready to make their mark as researchers in art history or art theory, curators, art critics and other advanced professionals.

Curriculum

Learning to think about art from multiple perspectives

First- and second-year students learn the fundamentals of art history and art theory as well as practical skills of art laying the foundation for art research. They also broaden their research by taking various classes depending on their interests and they make presentations on research topics. Starting in their third year, students focus more on specialization through small seminars, learning research approaches and methodologies as they prepare for their graduation thesis by studying the literature on specific themes and conducting their own off-campus research. Fourth-year students select an area of specialization and work on their graduation research.
