Oil Painting

Seeking out new ways of individual expression

Art has diversified and become relentlessly experimental, making it challenging for creators to find unique ways of expression. Artists must dig deeply inside themselves to find a source for new creation, both conceptual and practical.
The oil painting major uses painting as the starting point for expressive pursuits as students seek out their own unique talents. They are encouraged to select classes that interests them from a broad curriculum, working alongside faculty members in pursuit of individual expression. The program aims to develop artists who make their mark on the world by respecting the individual and cultivating a spirit of independence and inquiry.

Curriculum

Small-group learning that puts individual talent at center stage

Faculty bring their own unique perspectives to identifying the diverse ideas and expression in each student with the goal of developing their full potential. First-year students learn the practical side of oil painting, including creation and techniques in murals, printmaking, and spatial expression. In their second year, students begin learning across the board by selecting courses that interest them. Third-year students select a faculty advisor and begin pursuing their own creations through dialogue-based tutorial courses, critique weeks, and more. Seniors primarily?engage in?creating graduation works as the culmination of their works.
